Marquam Trail To Council Crest

Portland has many redeeming qualities.  If I had to choose the best, I could make a case for a few different characteristics.  If I had to choose a favorite, I might go with the cities parks.  Personally, I love to spend time in the great outdoors. I very much enjoy a good hike.  A quiet and serene walk in the woods can't be beat.  Portland's parks have so many options for just these types of hikes!  The best part?  Its all within the city limits.

Mt. Hood, Sim & Teresa

Today, not only was the sun peaking out from behind the clouds, but the temperature reached into to the fifties. It was perfect weather for spending time outdoors.  Teresa and I quickly decided to finish the normal chores and go on a hike.  Earlier in the winter, we picked out 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles from Powell's.  This was the first day we used the book, and it was extremely useful.   It helped us pick out the Marquam Trail to Council Crest Park.   This particular trail caught our eye because of its proximity to home and potential for awesomeness.  The trail carves its way through the Marquam Nature Park to Council Crest.   Atop Council Crest, one has great views of Mt. Hood.  This point is the highest in Portland's city limits.

The trailhead is a short drive from downtown to the edges of the southwest.  The Marquam Trail Shelter has ample parking so, we had no issues getting right onto the trail.  The walk has a slight incline from about 300 feet to 1200 feet.  Its not a hard walk.  The trail winds through a wooded corridor and is lined with immaculate homes. Could you imagine stepping off your elevated deck directly onto the perfect trail?  Lucky people.

We passed a number of other hikers.  Many people brought their young families and dogs.  Seeing people outside is a nice change from the norm.  It seems the winter weather keeps most Oregonians shut into their homes.  In between saying hello, we had stretches of empty space.  The forest views proved tranquil and inviting.

Once you reach the top of the trail, you enter Council Crest.  On a clear day, the Cascades tower over the landscape.  Unfortunately for us, the day was slightly overcast.  We were able to gaze upon Mt. Hood.  Its peak reaches past 11,000 feet.  On most days, you can see this volcano keeping watch over Portland.  The sight is one to behold.

The only annoying part of the entire experience was the mud.  The walk down the mountain was precarious.  I felt like I was slipping through a barnyard.  The mud is a small price to pay for such an invigorating afternoon.  I know we will revisit this hike.  I am looking forward to a clear day visit.  I want to see all four Cascade volcanoes!  I won't discount my first time on this trail -- a great walk on Saturday.
