Foot Stomping Through The Southeast
Sounds like fun doesn't it? I was anticipating a Saturday night full of dancing. While searching through the numerous local bands, I found Jujuba. In stark contrast to most of the music around here, Jujuba delivers high energy Afro-beat and Juju music. Last night, they played at the Goodfoot Lounge on Stark. I was in attendance.
My first journey to the Goodfoot was last fall. While I was out here house hunting, I saw a slick Bluegrass band. It was a good night of music. I had fond memories. That being said, the venue is in the basement of a building. The ceilings are low. The air circulation is spotty. The stage is on the same level as the patrons. I didn't mind these aspects because the place wasn't packed to the gills. This was not the case for Jujuba. They filled the place quickly. It wasn't all bad. You must wait in line at the bar for a drink. This keeps the drink orders moving steadily. We had space to stand in the back. I was even able to dance for a few songs. What really sucks is the non-existent view and bad sound. Because there is no stage, you can't see the performers. Because there is no stage, the sound doesn't have a chance to permeate the room. It seems to get lost in the wall of people. It feels more like a crowded house party then a concert. We didn't stay for the entire performance. On the way out of the venue, I stopped by merch. I expressed my displeasure for the venue but my love for the music. I was told they're trying to book the Crystal Ballroom. A real stage? That would be nice.
To catch the bus, we had to walk through Belmont. Since the night was still early, we stopped into The Blue Monk. I've read good things. I will now second that which I have read. The staff was awesome. I struck up some good conversation with the bartenders. The beer selection was decent, and I was able to try a few new brews. My favorite was a Organic Wit Beer. I can't remember the brewery. I am going back to this bar so, I'll pay closer attention next time.
The evening wasn't a complete loss. I want to stress the awesomeness of the music I did hear. Jujuba has talent. I really like their sound. I am going to think twice before attending another show at the Goodfoot. The Blue Monk was a sweet bar. Next time I am down in the Southeast, I'll have to stop by to figure out that beer.
