Coming Clean

Diego Maradona is considered one of the best soccer (football) players of all time. He played for internationally renowned clubs like Napoli, FC Barcelona, and Boca Juniors. He helped Argentina win the World Cup in 1986. This World Cup would not have been won by Argentina without the "Hand of God" goal scored by Maradona.

Hand Of God Goal
He touched it!

This goal (video) put Argentina up 1-0 over England. Eventually, Maradona scored a second goal that was voted Goal of the Century in 2002. England added one to make the final score 2-1. Argentina then went on to win the 1986 World Cup. The English hated Maradona for many years.

In 2002's "Yo soy el Diego", Maradona confessed he touched the ball with his hand.

"Now I feel I am able to say what I couldn't then. At the time I called it 'the hand of God'. Bollocks was it the hand of God, it was the hand of Diego! And it felt a little bit like pickpocketing the English."
Monday night, Maradona described the majority of the incident to Argentine talk radio.

Why has he felt the need to set the record straight? Maybe he is feeling remorse while aging. It might be part of his entire lifestyle change. He has overcome horrible drug addictions and various health complications. Either way, he is one of the greatest players of all time - if you don't mind a cheater.

Well, I must say...this certainly was an unexpected post. Different than say...pictures of cats or introductions between girlfriends and family goats. Good stuff today Simeon. That Argentinian team from '86 was simply unstoppable....and that was probably the best world cup in our lifetime. If I remember correctly I think the ref that didn't catch the handball was Tunisian....reason #472 why Tunisians should not be allowed to referee a World Cup quarterfinal (I formally apologize to any Tunisians I may have offended with this comment. Please understand that I have always held people from North Africa in the highest respect). Forza Maradona!
