Crab Shell Baseball
Memorial Day Weekend is a time to sit back and be thankful for those that gave their lives for freedom. Sadly enough, most people do not take a second to consider this fact, and they hurry off to a bar-b-que or beach. I can't say that I was a good American. Next year, I'll have to visit the Veteran's Cemetary in Annapolis. Do the right thing. As for this year, Megan's Grandparents were kind enough to let us borrow their condo in Ocean City, Maryland. The Pathfinder left Annapolis shortly before 4pm. Denby, Jason, Matt, Megan, and I were excited to get away for the weekend.
I was so suprised with the traffic, or lack their of. We made it to the Bay Bridge in twenty minutes, and there were no lines leading to the tool. How wonderful. The rest of the trip through the Eastern Shore proved simple. We only had one hangup outside Salisbury. A silly state trooper said Denby was driving too fast. Our final destination was reached around 630pm.
The condo community is called Mirabella. It is located between 122nd and 123rd streets. It quite far up Ocean Highway, but the city buses are somewhat reliant. Suprisngly enough, it is across Ocean Highway from Pete's grandparents place. This is amazingly convenient for beach, boardwalk, and other going out rendezvous.
We unpacked the car and settled into the cozy condo. It was such a good idea on Denby's part to bring food for lunch and breakfast. Plus, we had plenty of drinks and beer on hand. We spent sometime relaxing on the deck. The Baltimore Crew was not due to arrive till Saturday so, we soon decided on a place to eat dinner. I should have known the meal would be interesting when we called Higgin's Crab House four times to ask about crab prices and specials.
Luckily, they have a location on 132nd street. This gave us a chance to walk through the amazing evening. The temperature was just right and the sun was setting. I love this time a day at this type of location! I'm glad everyone was convinced to walk. When we arrived, we saw tables outside open for dinner. Perfect.
We were seated away from the crowds. This was a wize choice on the hostesses part. Our behavior went south shortly after ordering the first round of beverages. I personally was taking an easy, but that didn't stop my silly antics.
As the menus were distributed, I thought we had died and gone to heaven. Their array of All-You-Can-Eats is unbelievable. The combos included Ribs & Crabs, Shrimp & Crabs, Ribs & Shrimp, and more. Each All-You-Can-Eat came with Fried Chicken, Corn, Maryland Crab Soup, and French Fries. Wow. I had Ribs & Shrimp because; I was a bit weary of Crabs so early in the season. I think I made the right choice. Everyone seemed to agree, the crabs were a bit small.
Toward the end of the meal, I took a phone call, and I walked away from the table. As I was listening to Gina talk about the night back in Annapolis, a piece of chicken fell at my feet. Hmm, this could have only come from one location. I hurled the chicken back across the parking lot toward our table. This continued a few times. After I was off the phone, Jason had the idea of Crab Shell Baseball. He pitched shells to me, and I tried to hit them with a mallet. Good Times. Our next dinner event was throwing full ears of corn at Matt's head. In between each event, we held inappropriate and lude conversation. The wait staff loved us. We actually made friends with a few. We left a message for Bob and Jen. A memeber of the wait staff kicked off the greeting...
I'm glad we walked to dinner because, our transportation home was safe. Back at the condo, we got ready for bed. I laid out mine on the floor in the bedroom. It was nice to have AC and a fan. How lucky. The night wasn't rockstar, but the next day was beach time. There was no need to stay out late when the glorious sand and ocean is in the near future. I was pretty tired anyway. Hitting 3-5 with one RBI and a double in Crab Shell Baseball is a full night.
