Intergalactic Travel
I finished up an interesting yet very random book this week - The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The book follows Earthling Arthur Dent and Alien Ford Prefect as they nearly escape Earth's destruction and journey on too a deep space adventure. You might say, I wanted to read the book before I saw the movie, but its required reading for work. Our new CMS will be named Prefect.
I will say, this book is a lot of fun. Its more random then I can be. The author does an excellent job of tying some random aspects of the book into the plot line. They are used to foreshadow and twist the story. Although, some random musings are purely for entertainment and randomness. I love it.
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy is a travel book to the ends of space. Think Let's Go on such a broader scale. Ford Prefect is an editor for the book. He was stranded on Earth for 15 years when he only wanted to stay a few days. The book is electronic because; it has an inumerable amount of pages containing endless information.
The book is part of a trilogy that epanded into a five part series. The books were preceeded by a radio comedy show written by Douglas Adams in the late 1970s. I noticed a few influences of the book. First, I use a chat program called Trillian. It is named after Zaphod Beeblebrox's girlfriend. Second, a downtrodden and depressed robot named Marvin plays an intricate role in the story. He is referred to as a Paranoid Android. Yay Radiohead! A third, I noticed was a Coldplay reference. The front of the guide is inscribed with "Don't Panic." Its so large, that one's natural reaction is be overwhelmed and quite possible panic.
I am going out tonight to get the second installment of the series, "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe." That was my only compliant about Hitchhikers. I thought it was way too short. I was happy to find out that four more books exist to carry on the story. Do yourself a favor, and read the book before you watch the movie.
